ROSA PARKS SENIOR HOUSING 1251 Turk Street, San Francisco
Conversion of a failed 11-story public housing complex into a vibrant and successful community for seniors.
The very successful rescue of this high-rise building, slated for the wrecking ball, provided a seminal example of how existing failed public housing can be rescued and revitalized to provide successful new housing.
Working with a sociologist, the architects obtained extensive tenant input through a survey of other existing senior complexes and by reviewing the literature on successful models of senior housing.
The social, psychological, economic and physical needs of seniors were addressed by developing a program that carefully considered these needs. This translated into a design rich in the little details that helped this large community of seniors to form a sense of community.
The largest of San Francisco’s senior complexes, it is also the most successful and has become the flagship of the San Francisco Housing Authority.
